Good-Bye 1st Graders...Hello 2nd Graders

On June 4th I said good-bye to my hippos. It was a crazy, sad, and fun-filled day! I held back the tears all the way until the end of the day when I passed out presents to my kids. I gave each kid their own Hippo Journal with the hopes that they'll continue to write even over the summer break...we'll see! I also always give my kids a book at the end of the year, but this year I though each kid should have a book that was special to them. So I typed up pre-made letters to each kid on labels and let them all pick one book from our classroom library for them to keep and then put the label inside the cover. The big gift was that I surprised them all and let every kid pick one of the stuffed animal hippos from our room for them to keep. Their mouthes dropped open when I told them that and one kid even asked, "Are you sure this is OK Miss Haston?" As they all thanked me I worked super hard at keeping the tears hidden for fear of freaking them out!

At the end of the day once everyone was gone I still couldn't believe it was over. I have loved each and every one of my students over the previous years, but being with this class for two years just made good-bye that much harder. They have grown so much over the past two years and I couldn't be prouder of them!
