Friday

Today was our last full day here.

We loaded up the cars and headed out of town.  We first stopped at this lady’s house where a doctor that the organization works with was making a “road call” or as we would say a “house call.”  There was an 80 year old lady who was basically dying from diarrhea and fear that is was a case of the now dreaded cholera down here.  Deb and I hung out outside and tried to secretly pass out suckers and silly bands to kids until we were swarmed by every kid and adult in the surrounding area.

Then we loaded back up and headed down the road to go to the school.  We had to walk up a hill to get to the school and a little village boy named Sandy came running up and just put his hand in mine and proceeded to walk with me the whole way up to the school.  It was the sweetest thing.  I fell in love…which was probably the 30th time that had happened already this week!

We got to the school and I begged them to let me bring Sandy in with me because he was just too darn cute.  Thankfully they said OK!

The school…imagine Little House on the Prairie one room school building/church and that’s what this was!  They had it divided by moving brown chalkboards to divide the ages and classes up and there were four classes.

We passed out white cardstock to each child and crayons.  The organization is having a big Haiti Festival in two weeks and they wanted to get some pictures made by kids to use at it.  So for about a hour kids colored and we gave them thumbs up…the universal language for “good job!”

This was my most favorite part!  Surrounded by kids working with smiles on their faces…it was a reminder that the Lord gave me a teacher’s heart!

After that the teachers tried to resume their teaching and we headed to the front of the room to pass out socks, underwear, bubbles, and silly bands.  This is when the chaos ensued!

We called them up class by class, which worked fine for a little bit.  However, the entire village by this time had figured out there were white people passing out things at the school so the whole building was surrounded.  Moms with their little kids who weren’t in this school began to sneak in and push their kids to the front to receive the goodies.  It got to be hard to figure out who was who.

Finally we ran out of underwear and made sure that all the school children had received something and then we packed up and left.

Once back at the car we begged Pat to let us go to the beach just so we could say we put our feet in the ocean.  Most of these women are from Minnesota and South Dakota so putting their feet in the ocean doesn’t happen too often for them!

We got there and it was absolutely GORGEOUS!!!  We started by just putting our feet in the water, but somehow by the end all 10 of us were swimming still fully clothed.  It did feel nice in that cool water!

We sunned off for a little bit, grabbed a cold Coke, and then loaded back up to head home.

The afternoon came to an end with showers and naps all around.

Now its time to pack up, say our good-byes, and head home tomorrow!
