Domesticated

On Friday night when I got home from babysitting Kate and Cobb were hanging out with some former student ministry/YoungLife kids home from college.  We sat around laughing, talking, playing stupid games on iPhones, and listening to them talk about life.

Right before they left one girl was telling another boy how now she is totally “domesticated”…and of course they all laughed and asked what does that even mean.  She replied, “It means all I do is cook, laundry, clean, and study.”

All day today I kept thinking to myself, “I’m so domesticated!”…minus the whole studying thing!  So glad that will never be a part of my life again no matter how much my mom wants me to wear one of those funny hats at graduation.  She of course means a doctorate hat…NOT going to happen!

Anyways, yesterday after a nice Sunday nap I sat down to look up easy recipes on the computer.  I’m very much in the habit of eating out a lot or filling myself with ham sandwiches or Campbell’s soup.  I’ve decided it would be much more financially beneficial to start cooking for myself…not to mention good practice for a future husband I’m praying the Lord is working on for me!!

I found several things and made out my grocery list.  Next, I did a load of laundry.  I finished up To Kill A Mockingbird and then headed to the kitchen to cook dinner for myself and Cobb.

I made chicken fettuccini alfredo with green beans and garlic bread.  Cobb giggled when she saw that the garlic bread was actually old hot dog buns toasted with some garlic salt on them…thanks Debo for teaching me to be resourceful!

It felt so good last night to cook a meal and to have cleaned up the dishes before going to bed too.

So then this morning I woke up at 7:30 so that I could hit the grocery store before it got too busy.  And man do I love grocery shopping that early.  Everyone looks crap right along with you so it doesn’t matter that I didn’t fix my bedhead ponytail or that I accidentally forgot to brush my teeth.

I came home and put everything away and then got things ready because I had planned to cook a rotisserie chicken in the crock pot today so that we would have chicken for the various meals I’d planned throughout the week.  Now I realize that nowadays you can just pick up a rotisserie chicken already cooked at the grocery store, but what fun is that?  Plus this way is cheaper and I was determined to be a real cook this week.

I worried all day long about whether the house had burned down due to the chicken cooking all day, but it didn’t and when I got home…boy did the house smell good.

So tonight I used some of the chicken to make some tacos.  I’ll make anything that gives me an excuse to use avocadoes these days!

I even made homemade sweet tea for the first time tonight!  I’ve always said I wanted to marry a boy from Alabama because you could be sure he knew how to make good sweet tea or at least his mama would know how.  Yet again I’ve proven that I don’t need a man…although I’d still like one!

I ate my dinner, drank my sweet tea, cleaned up the kitchen, and then took a bath and read.

I am one domesticated Haston!

Old photo...but I thought it was appropriate!
