Subbing Take 2

Poor Brad is still stuck in the hospital with idiots as doctors so I subbed for Chelsea again today so she could get some sleep and stay with Brad.  Let me preface by saying that Chelsea does have a sweet class with some really cute kids and I did have fun with them...BUT there are also some kids who felt as though their mission today was to test my limits!

If you know me well, then you know that I am a strict teacher who insists on kids raising their hand before speaking, not interrupting the teacher, sitting still whilst on the carpet, walking quietly in the hallway, and showing respect to the teacher.  Some of Chelsea's kids seem to think that those things should come second fiddle when they...
A) are thirsty
B) want to tell you when you're doing something differently than Mrs. Coleman
C) feel like working on the picture from music class is way more important than the assignment I gave
or D)  think that receiving 5 warnings isn't scary enough for them

In the end, we all survived the day and I only lost about 40% of my voice today!  Here are some of the other things that were accomplished today...

  • all 20 kids completed all 3 of their assignments for the day
  • not one child was lost
  • 3 water bottles from our class were left scattered about the school at the end of the day...cafeteria, gym, and sidewalk
  • 3 kids changed their color to yellow
  • 2 kids went home with a yellow
  • I made 5 kids cry...is it wrong that I'm most proud of this?
  • book buddies were made
  • one dance to "Lean On Me" was learned
  • 1 out of 7 hallway transitions was done in silence and with all 40 hands to themselves
  • I was called "mom" once
  • I received 2 cards from students in Chelsea's class
  • I convinced the kids that I was magic and could wave my hands to make them appear in a straight line
  • When asked what their favorite part of 1st grade was I received this response, "I like my teacher Mrs. Coleman and my other teacher Miss Haston"
I think you would agree that it was a successful day!  Here are three funny stories from today...

1. Mine and Paul's conversation...
Paul: "Can we play on the monkey bars?"
Me: "I'm not sure we'll have to ask Miss Burleson."
Paul: "Why can't you make your own decisions?"
**I mean doesn't he know that Miss Burleson is really the one who is in charge???

2. The kids had an assignment to write a sentence of something that they can do now that they are 1st graders, but that they couldn't do when they were kindergarteners.  Sweet Chase wrote a great sentence that said "I can ti my shoos." (I can tie my shoes.)  Right after he turns his paper in he walks back to his seat, attempts to show off those impressive shoe tying skills but sadly can't figure it out and asks the girl next to him to do it for him.  It's the thought that counts I guess!

3. At the end of the day I let them color on construction paper with markers as their Fun Friday activity...kinda lame I know!  Ryder colored this great picture of his family and off to the side of the picture he drew what looked to be like a fire next to a person.  So I of course asked him about it.  His response was, "Oh that's where we burned my grandma in the oven."  I'm sorry...WHAT?  He continues to go on and on about how that is what she wanted and how it was ok because they burned her in her favorite red dress.  I'm sure hoping this story is about how his grandma was cremated...or otherwise switching Chelsea's class name from Coleman Campers to Coleman Crazies just might be the best idea.

It really was a great day and as always I enjoyed being up at Reed with my girls and seeing all my old students...and I finally got my hug from Grayson!  Hopefully the idiot doctors will get Brad back to his healthy self, Chelsea will get some much needed rest, and the next time I go up to school will be to bring my girls a Sonic drink!
