My 28th Birthday

The night before was clearly awful and I was totally not expecting that.  However, the day of was perfect!

I woke up to my facebook page already being overloaded with birthday wishes and then I went for a run.  My first stop for the day was to see my sweet Hannah at Starbucks.  She is a freshman at SMU who I’m trying to meet with regularly and mentor in some capacity.  Summer has been crazy so this was the first time we’d seen each other since July.  It was a great way to start my day!

Then it was off to lunch with my friend Emily and her little girl, who I tell people is my niece, Avery.  Emily and I taught at Reed together my first two years and helped each other survive.  She left me when she had her twin boys, also known as my nephews, Brayden and Bryce.  Thankfully the Lord has allowed us to remain such good friends over the years and even without the bond of Reed to hold us together.

I went home and did one of my most favorite things in the world…took a nap!  Then Frush came over and we went to the Main Event to play shuffleboard.  He said we could go do whatever I wanted and that is what I chose!  Lucky for us it was happy hour at the Main Event and so the game was free and Frush got a cheap beer.  And would you believe that they served Smirnoff Ice there as well?  So there it was at 3:00 in the afternoon on a weekday and I was boozing it up at the Main Event!  I also beat Frush 15 to 0…which was made even more fun since he is an extremely competitive person.  I guess it should also be said that he won the first two games!

The day ended with dinner with my most favorite girls…minus Chelsea!  My girls took me to dinner at Mi Cocina, but since Chelsea had had a crazy couple of days we gave her a pass to stay home and go to bed early.  I love these girls so much and LOVED getting to have my birthday dinner with them.  We talked boys, school, parties, trips, clothes, when I would sub, and so much more!  I kept talking away forgetting that they had to get up super early for work the next morning.

The day was a 180 from the night before and I couldn’t be more thankful for that.

I got over 100 facebook birthday wishes and I don’t know how many phone calls and text messages.  I even got several cards from former students in the mail!

The thing I most dreaded was not receiving that phone call from my dad, but I was reminded of a story that made me laugh about my dad.  A few years ago I got a phone call from my dad on July 31st where he said, “Happy Birthday Sweetie!”…of which I had to remind him that he was an entire month early!  That memory kept coming to mind all day and would make me smile when I remembered it and my dad.  It’s amazing how the Lord provides in some of the most unexpected ways and at just the right time!

For the entire 27th year of my life I constantly had to be reminded by Cobb and friends of how old I was.  That 27 was just really hard for me to remember for some reason.  However, I’m thinking that 28 is going to be my year and won’t be so hard to remember…we’ll see though!
