My BFF wanted to take me on a girl’s trip for my birthday this year…so who was I to argue? Being Miss Indecisive I told her that the best gift she could give me would be for me to not have to decide where we go. After many options we finally decided to go to Savannah because it wouldn’t be a far flight for her and it was a place that neither of us had been to before. As it turns out…best place for a girl’s trip!
We both flew in on Saturday and went straight to the cutest B&B that Michelle had picked out for us. All the furniture were antiques and there were hardwood floors throughout the entire place. Our favorite part…adorable twin beds in our room! We first went walking down Bull St., the “main strip”, looking for somewhere to eat. We landed at the City Market Café…where I had my first of many incredible sweet teas! We took some time to walk around and scope things out a bit then headed back to our place to decide what adventures the night would hold.
That night we found this cute little whole in the wall Italian place called Leoci’s. We got to sit outside and ended up talking and eating for a couple of hours.
Saturday morning we had yummy blueberry pancakes at our place and then set out for Tybee beach, which is only about a 30 minute drive away. We both forgot towels so we bought some cheap ones at a store ironically called “Christy’s” and went looking for the perfect spot on the beach. It turned out to be a little overcast so we got to lay and read for a long time.
We were laughing because whilst we were laying there to the left of us there were two high school girls discussing what boys they liked and the girls they hated. Right before we left 3 boys came up to tell them bye and give them hugs and it was the most perfect awkward high school good-bye that you could imagine. Once the boys left, the girls packed up their things and debriefed what they liked and disliked about the boys. I couldn’t help but think to myself how they were like the past Michelle and I…where conversations revolved around who we liked and didn’t like. Then to the left of us sat two old ladies in bathing suits and gray hair sitting in lounge chairs reading and we decided that was the future Michelle and I…they were totally more prepared than us. They had lounge chairs, soft towels, clips to hold their towels in place on the chairs, hats to keep the sun away, and a bag full of yummy snacks. We laughed about the past us, the future us, and for now the present us!
After the beach we headed back for some much needed showers and then embarked on what turned out to be a much harder search for dinner than we had anticipated. We thought we would simply google some good restaurants for Savannah, particularly ones with good southern cooking and fried green tomatoes. However, as it turns out almost every place imaginable is closed on Sundays or has a dress code! We searched and searched and finally found Jazz’d. We had a great dinner full of different things, but no fried green tomatoes. We stayed up that night so that I could show her the blogs I’ve recently discovered that are inspiring and challenging me.
Monday was a busy day! We woke up and had a quick breakfast at our place, packed up our stuff, checked out of the B&B, and then headed into town to go on a food tour! I’ve never been on a food tour before, but I would highly recommend it. We met these two other girls who were on a girl’s trip as well so we became each other’s picture buddies and helped each other take snapshots everywhere we went. We loaded onto a bus and then traveled around Savannah to six different locations and everywhere got to eat something different…it was amazing! We had…
Tomato sandwiches - which I declined since it was made with mayonnaise…YUCK
Cupcakes - delicious and I learned that Michelle isn’t a cupcake fan…WHAT?
Shrimp and grits - I even tried collared greens…Debo are you impressed?
Honey - a lil’ sweet for me and tasted like I was eating a candle
Fried chicken and green beans – we went to Paula Dean’s place and got to pick 2 things off the buffet…Michelle got chicken and mac and cheese so we could share
Ice cream – we went to this place called Leopold’s and I had my favorite…caramel ice cream
Then at the end they dropped us off at Johnson Square so that we could meet Savannah Dan for our next tour. Michelle found out about this great walking tour that is given by who they call “Savannah Dan”…he wears a sear sucker suit, straw hat, bow tie, and speaks with a legit southern accent. As it turns out Michelle and I were the only ones signed up for the 2:00 tour so we got him all to ourselves. It was wonderful! We walked all through town with him telling us the most interesting stories and facts about Savannah that I never knew and he made it so fun! A few things I learned…
- · Savannah was the 13th colony
- · Savannah was started for criminals and misfits to get out of Britain
- · It has the home that had the first indoor plumbing in America
- · It’s the birthplace of Juliet Gordon…found of Girl Scouts
- · The first home with electricity in Georgia is there
- · It has 24 squares built in the city
- · Forrest Gump was filmed there, but the bench he sat on doesn’t really exist
- · Julia Robert’s movie, Let’s Give Them Something To Talk About, was filmed there
We finished up the tour and hustled back to the car so that we could get to the airport in time. Surprise to both of us…we were on the same first flight, but sadly did not get to sit together! We landed in Charlotte, said our good-byes, and then headed our separate ways.
This was the first time that Michelle and I have ever gone a girl’s trip together like this and we decided at the end of it this needed to be an annual event…and if I ever get married then one day maybe the boys can come too!
Michelle and I became friends in the 6th grade and have had several ups and downs along the way, gone through loves and losses, traveled to many places together, and all throughout it remained best friends. It cracked me up to hear the things we talked about this weekend…singleness, having babies, reminiscing about old fights we had, gossiping about high school friends, sick grandmas, losing parents, financial issues, where we are spiritually, and lots of stupid things that only the two of us would think are hilarious. It’s funny to think about how our conversations over the years have changed…just like those young girls on the beach. Who knows what we’ll be talking about when we’re the older ladies on the beach one day…but Lord knows we’ll still be looking good in our bathing suits!
